IwAr: Thunder eggs geodes for rock tumbler
This is a six pound box of rough thunder eggs. Many people call these geodes, but at the rock shop we call them thunder eggs because they are usually filled with agate all the way through. If a stone is hollow on the inside and filled with crystals or a coating of botroidal agate then we call it a geode. I've also heard these called agate nodules.
The photos show some example thunder eggs similar to what you will be receiving. The photo with the measuring tape shows six pounds worth of these rocks and is intended to show approximate size and shape of what you will be receiving.
Another photo shows some randomly chosen thunder eggs that I sliced open to give you an idea of what you might expect to find inside. What you receive will not be cut open. There might even be some geodes in the box since we don't know what's inside unless we cut them open, but we try to include only thunder eggs. (One of the three that I cut open for this photo was a geode.)
Another photo shows what these look like after being broken open with a hammer.
I love to throw these rocks whole into a rock tumbler, because the outer layer is often a softer stone than the agate inside, so I end up with veins of agate raised up out of the base rock. The agate takes a high polish during tumbling and the base rock at most takes a dull shine, or even an earthy luster after they are tumbled, so the contrast is delightful. I've shown an example of some of these in another photo.
Many people slice these open and polish the face to make beautiful display specimens. Others make slabs out of them, polishing the slabs, or making cabochons for jewelry.
The smallest stones we have are about 1.5 inches in diameter. If you have a preference about the size of stone you'd like to receive, please let us know when you make payment. We could send one large thunder egg if you like, or many smaller ones. A six pound thunder egg is about 4" in diameter depending on how much agate it has inside. If you don't express a preference, then we will send thunder eggs on the smaller end of the scale, about 2 inches in diameter.
We ship by UPS because it is the most affordable way we have found to ship heavy boxes of rocks. We typically ship within a week of receiving payment.
These thunder eggs come primarily from Utah and Oregon. The rocks have been washed to remove dirt.
